Progress

chair shot.jpg

I have tried to take this shot once a month since Julia was born (which will be a year next Friday) and once I get organized I'd love to hunt back through our digital pictures to see all of them or I could design something that displayed them all. Wow, that would be cool. Hmmm, something else to distract me from the other things I should be working on.

Speaking of things to be working on:

My latest focus has been smocking their Easter dresses. Lizzie's is getting close to finished, I need to add buds (or french knots) to the green vine and some flowers. That's after I finish the blue part of course. I'm hoping to start Julia's this weekend. My goal is to finish the smocking by the first weekend in April so there is plenty of time to sew them together.

My other project is to finish our office which we have started to redo. We took a trip down to Atlanta to shop at Ikea almost two weeks ago. That place was crazy, especially on a Saturday. It was totally overwhelming for me since we were shopping for an entire new office. Plus we were lucky enough to have the priviledge of taking both girls. Actually, Julia was pretty much off our hands since we went with the Goseys and they carried her in a back pack the entire time! What a help. My one and only complaint about Ikea was their lack of restrooms. There was ONE on the showroom floor. For a place to market themselves as kid friendly and to have one restroom that you had to hike to everytime your two year old said they need to go potty was a pain. It didn't help that we didn't really know the lay out of the store and would get lost each time but we did survive the FIVE hours we spent there and scored some great stuff for our office. I think these 2 pictures of Lizzie's finger paintings will be my favorite part of the office.

They aren't on the wall yet and the office is not finished yet, we have (really just me since its my stuff) lots of organizing to do and we got the wrong set of cabinets so we'll have to return those this weekend on our way to Augusta. But its coming along, the walls are a true sky blue and the desks are red. It's very bold and I'll admit I was too chicken to get it but Andy insisted. I'm such a chicken when it comes to color, thank goodness he insisted because I know I'll end up loving it. Most of my designs have pretty muted colors so using really saturated colors don't appeal to me, but it does work.

In order to love it though, I've got to first clean it. I just extended Lizzie's TV time to include a Barney episode so I better make the most of it.

Hey Jennifer! I'm a friend of Lisa Bluford's, and she sent me this link to your blog so I could see the fingerpainting pictures. What a fantastic idea! My daughter is 15 months old, and I'm always looking for great ideas like this. I may even get her some fingerpaints this weekend and let her have some fun.

Where do you get your smocking materials? I would love to do that! My mom started taking heirloom sewing classes as soon as she found out I was having a girl, and I have some beautiful things that she's done. In fact, Daddy got her a smocking machine for Christmas so that she could smock her own material instead of paying someone else to do it. Anyway, I've cross-stitched for years, and Lisa taught me to crochet, so I may as well add smocking to my list of crafts!

Your girls are beautiful! Take care!

They sky blue and red are my favorite combination! with some back and off-white accents, you're ready to go! haha. That is, of course, appart from green and orange that have a special place in my heart.

I'm actually making a website right now where I've convinced her to use some bright colors, and got her so into it that I think she may have gone overboard! She wanted the color of the entire screen to change on every single page! AHHHH, it's like a color assault. I'm trying to ween her off that idea.

I'll be coming home home sooo soon! I'll leave here in 5 weeks, then be in Italy with dad for a few days, and be back in town by mid May. I'm so excited! It will be fantastic to be back in the US of A. I feel like singing a song about it.....
I love you. You love me. We're best friends, as friends should be...
Have Lizzie explain that one.

Love you guys.

P.S. I found this dress at Anthropologie.com that has some kind of smocking in it, and I want to learn so I can make the dress! Not that it will turn out as good, but at $180...what else can you do, but hope no one will notice your sleeves are uneven.

You should put together a flip book of all the pictures you've taken of the girls on that chair, then you get to watch them grow up in 3 seconds; that'd be cool.

Have a safe trip this weekend.

Tracy- I'm so glad you stopped by! I've heard so much about you from our friend Lisa, whom I believe has taught half of Chattanooga how to crochet! I have a great friend who is teaching me to smock and has the pleater and the pattern that I used. Unfortunately there aren't really any good places here in Chattanooga (that I know of) that sell the really thin good cotton. We actually went to someone's house who used to own a fabric shop and she sold to us out of her own stash. Next time I have to get material I'll probably be going to Knoxville. If you have a cross stitch background that'll will be a big help and you'll pick it up so fast. I'm doing a bishop collar which I think is an easy way to start versus trying to do a panel and inserting it into your pattern.
In regards to the finger painting- I scanned them and then I had them printed out enlarged at kinkos on 12x18 paper. This is super cheap. I also like to scan them and print them smaller or cropped down and make little thank you cards out of them. Grandparents eat that stuff up! Lisa could probably do that for you- you're welcome Lisa!

Val- Come home, come home!! I'm so excited. Hey, send me the link to the dress. I love Anthropology. For years I dreamed of getting our bedding from there, that place is great. What a designers feast. But if I'm going to teach you to smock then you really need to live in Chattanooga...

Timmy- good idea. Ummm, how come we see just as much of you as when you lived in Atlanta. Hmmm, it just doesn't seem right. :) I'm trying to get Andy to come and get that swing set some time next week. We need to score ourselves a truck first!

I found a few websites where I could buy pleated pieces, and one where I could send my own material to be pleated. Once Mom is back on her feet, I may even try to get her to pleat stuff for me! If you want really nice, quality material, I have a fantastic store in Nashville that you can go to. I'm sure my mom would be happy to accompany you! This is where she takes her classes, and the ladies there definitely know their stuff. I went nuts looking at all the gorgeous fabrics they had. It's called Dancing Needles, and here's the link: http://sew2000.com/dancingneedles/index.html

One of the owners is Reba, and she's just the sweetest lady. They have the fancy stuff like imperial batiste and silks and real French lace that is to die for! I don't know what's in Knoxville, but this is definitely a wonderful place in Nashville.

Thanks for letting me know about the finger paintings. I definitely want to do that with Abbie. Of course, she may be more interested in eating it than painting with it, but I hope I can discourage that. She's actually not all that bad about putting things in her mouth.

Take care!

ah yeah...I think it's going to be like this until I graduate. I've got several papers to write in the next 4 weeks and prep for finals, seeing that this semester has been a bit crazy, outside of school, I'm not on top of my classes like I'd like to be. But, I'm sure I'll see you guys sometime soon.

wow, three comments from me, what's going on...

As I was driving back to Chatt tonight from class I was wondering, at what age do kids start to grasp the concept of time? When do they comprehend the idea of yesterday and tomorrow vs. today, or last night vs. tonight? As an example, suppose mommy and daddy get a weekend away from the kids and some friends come over to babysit for the weekend. How old does a child have to be to understand something like, "M & D will be back tomorrow"? I assume the first building block would be to understand the idea of "earlier" and "later."

I already told you that I wasn't going to have kids of my own and was just going to live vicariously (from a great distance) through yours...that is, anytime I'm curious about something kid related, I'll just ask you instead of having kids of my own to get the answer. This is one of those times.
