incredible
I realize its a completely unimaginative title but in regards to my NY trip it describes; how my husband acted while I was gone, the women I got to spend 5 days with, the city we were in, and the many experiences we had together.
This post has numerous pictures, and I'm still waiting on my sister's copies so I'm about to inherit over 300 more. I need to weed through them all and then upload to flickr with some sense of order. But in the mean time, here is just a taste of what we did. If you followed it on facebook, it will probably seem redundant.
Day 1- I kissed my family good bye around noon and flew out of Chattanooga and arrived in NY around 4 and made it to Liz's apt around 5. I unloaded my stuff, ate some of their italian leftovers from that day and we were off to the subway to head to the knicks game. I still don't even know who won, we were there for the experience. LOL We made fun of the dancers and made friends with the locals who sat next to us. We also saw a proposal and let me tell you, it was awkward. She didn't realize that they were on the big screen and it seemed like she was half smiling at him while the poor guy was down on his knee. After realizing they were on the big screen she sort of nodded and took the box, but didn't put the ring on. We speculated about their life and her reaction for most the rest of the game. :)
One thing for me that reminds me of previous trips to NY is the smell of the carmelized or sugared nuts that are sold by street vendors. I love them! I can become completely consumed once I catch the scent of them and have to hunt them down till I have a bag of almonds. :) We ran into some before the knicks game but since I didn't smell them before we found them we waited for another vendor. I know, so ridiculous. But the anticipation of getting them is part of the fun. I got them everyday, and I was going to bring some back for the girls but I ate them on the plane. lol That's how much I love them.
I laughed for most of that evening. From there we headed to time square and walked around making our way back to Liz's apt late that night.

Heather in Time Square. She had taken the bus tour the day before and was full of fascinating facts about the city. It was great!

Day 2- Up around 8 and (after I wait for the others to primp and get pretty), coffee in hand and off to the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. This was one thing on my list that I insisted we do and I'm so glad we did. We spent the morning admiring their felt exhibit (honestly I could write an entire post just on this exhibit and I still might).

At the end of the exhibit there were videos of the process of making certain pieces in the show. I loved this and have since watched them again on youtube. I love to see a piece and then see the first sketches from the artist and then seeing a video of how they went about construction was just amazing.
One of my favorite parts of the exhibit was a section that was created to look like a palace yurt. For the sake of space and time I'll just post the links, but really it was quite amazing. I did buy the exhibit book and a felt chrysanthemum.

Making of felt yurt
Blog post about exhibit, with sketches and samples- gorgeous
Besides the palace yurt there were clothing pieces where the designer believed in using minimal stitching and the pieces were held together or darted by felted wool pieces. It was incredible. I wish I was more of a dress maker and had the nerve to experiment with this. I still might...you know, in my spare time. :) I just need to get some sheep.
Christine Birkle clothing, unfortunately you can't click on close ups of these items.
Martha Stewart shows behind the scenes of felt exhibit, great little video. Please ignore her lame joke at the end.
Lunch at a little cafe called Eat, yummy black bean soup and a rest before the Met.
We got to the Met in early afternoon and stayed until they were shoving people out the doors at 5:30. It was probably a good thing we didn't have time in the gift shop. :)

Ugolino and his Sons Sculpture by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux
This was in the European Sculpture garden at the Met. I took several pictures of it, I think the intensity that it captured in marble was really remarkable. This is a father and his two sons and their two sons who have been sentenced to death by starvation. I believe he is often shown biting his fingers because he was grief stricken and fighting the temptation to consume his offspring who were offering themselves to him. Hmmm, sort of disturbing I know. The tension in their limbs down to the flexing of toes was very detailed.

Liz and Van Gogh, both lovely.
After the Met we got some crumbs cupcakes and went back to Liz's for a dinner of cupcakes and wine. :) They were huge and delicious, I think we all only ate a fourth of a cupcake. That was one of the many awesome things about staying with someone who lives in the city. We got to experience all these extra little treats and it made for an even more amazing trip.
Day 3-

Heather, Me and Liz across the street from Liz's apt right after they dropped off their laundry. In fact its the shop owner who took our picture. :)
It was absolutely gorgeous out.
I think Days 3&4 need to be another post entirely. So check back for a walk thru Central Park, playing piano at FAO Schwartz, a purchase at Tiffany & Co, battery park, broadway show, Grand Central station, Soho for brunch and shopping, celebrity sighting, and shopping in chinatown. Phew, I'm tired just remembering!
